  2. Aims of this Session • To understand how reading and writing is taught in the EYFS • Letters and Sounds • Reading at home • Guided Reading • To gain some ideas for supporting your child at home

  3. Letters and Sounds • Designed to help teach children how the alphabet works for reading and spelling by: • fostering children’s speaking and listening skills • teaching high quality phonic work • Letters and Sounds aims to secure fluent word recognition skills for reading by the end of Key Stage 1

  4. Making a good start – Phase One Phase One activities concentrate on developing children’s: • speaking and listening skills • phonological awareness • oral blending and segmenting

  5. Phase 1 • Activities are arranged under seven aspects: • Environmental sounds • Instrumental sounds • Body percussion • Rhythm and rhyme • Alliteration • Voice sounds • Oral blending and segmenting

  6. Phase 1 Activities within the seven aspects are designed to help children; • listen attentively • enlarge their vocabulary • speak confidently to adults and other children • discriminate phonemes • say the phonemes they hear, in order, all through the word • use sound-talk to segment words into phonemes

  7. The more words children know and understand before they start on a systematic programme of phonic work the better equipped they are to succeed.

  8. Systematic high quality phonics – Phase Two The purpose of this phase is to • teach at least 19 letters • begin blending and segmenting with letters • learn to read some high-frequency (tricky) words By the end of the phase many children will be able to read some words and spell them either on paper or using magnetic letters

  9. Systematic high quality phonics – Phase Two • discrete daily sessions, of around 20 minutes • opportunities to use and apply phonic knowledge and skills as opportunities arise across the curriculum throughout the day • multi-sensory activities

  10. Systematic high quality phonics – Phase 3 The purpose of this phase is to • teach another 25 graphemes, most of them comprising of two letters • learn to read more tricky words Automatic reading of all words – decodable and tricky - is the ultimate goal.

Reading at Home • Read yourself – be a good role model • Read everyday with your child • Read aloud • Give books as gifts • Make reading a privilege • Talk about the books • Involve your child in everyday activities such as making a shopping list and buying the groceries. Help your child become a more successful reader by reading to him or her from the time your child is born

  13. Guided Reading • Guided Reading sessions involve a teacher and a small group of children, The session would have a set of objectives to be taught through the course of a roughly twenty minute session.

  14. Guided Reading The structure of a typical session may include; • Book introduction • Strategy check • Independent reading • Returning to the text • Response to the text • Re-reading guided text
