Overview This session: Why we do this! How it helps the children. What is gained from this. Session 2: Different texts for different ages, comprehension and the older reader. Session 3: Online, overview and recap.
How can I instruct you? I hold a: Cert 3 in Education Support NVQ City and Guilds in Teaching Assistant (equal to Cert 4) 21 years experience as a parent, 10+ years Teaching assistant. Plus other qualifications PD certificates and a love of books!
The information learnt from today can be used in a library with the Reading Groups, a school library, a school classroom, and home with your children/grandchildren.
Your childhood book Do you have a favourite childhood book? What made it special? Was it read to you?
Why do we read to children.. They gain literacy skills! They learn to listen. Children model behaviour. You read with vigour, they enjoy it and read with vigour too! Children can get so much more from the story. If we don’t read to them, they will not enjoy reading.
Different books for different ages! This may sound obvious, but its not! Pre schoolers wont want to read a long book in a group, but snuggled up to mum or dad they will. Bright books v pastel books. Dr Seuss or Tomorrow when the war began?
Young readers! Read to children from a very very early age!
Repetition, repetition Our young readers need repetition. Going on a bear hunt, Each peach pear plum. They enjoy the repetition, rhythm and the rhyming.
Safety! When reading make sure: The environment is safe: no power cords to trip over, no spillages to slip on, no chairs to climb on! You are safe! Don’t put yourself into a situation where you feel vulnerable.
Getting started Make sure you have the books ready! Chairs/cushions arranged or easily accessible. Your water! It can be thirsty work! Any props are to hand.
Behaviour management Praise the positive, ignore the negative Get the children on your side! Use props, suspense and voice.
Post Office Text! Read the text, put in the best possible word for the omission. Why? To become conscious of the strategies we use as we read.
Post Office Text At a quarter past nine in early January, a woman entered the Post Office at Martin Place and inquired of one of the clerks if a letter was awaiting her. It was her third visit in as many days. On this day the clerk was able to assist (help) her. He handed her a letter which she opened immediately. Stepping back from the counter, she quickly looked to see the name of the sender as if to reassure herself, and then, clutching (clasping) the letter in her hand, hurried away with an air of strong nervous anticipation.
Post office Text Although the day was warm and summery, she was dressed entirely in black, which served to set off the extreme pallor of her complexion and the brilliancy of her eyes. Her name was PetriaVassilova. She was known as an enemy of the country and a grave risk to the security of the state.
We have learnt a vocabulary that helps us find the right word to fill the gap. We have a knowledge of words, what fits, what means the same, how it works in the sentence. We need to encourage children to read and learn these skills.
