Background • Age: 70 • Gender: Male • Work: Professional Musician, Guitarist, Songwriter, and Producer • Health Status: Still Recovering from Back Injury in 2000, hurting his ability to carry 13 pound Les Paul guitar on stage for several hours.
Background • Family Mental Health: No record of any mental health problems • Family Relationships: Was born an only child, has 3 children with his current wife, and 2 with his ex-wife • Social Relationships: very active with fan base, charities, and other musicians. Went into a depression and did not play music for years after the death of his band mate, Jon Bonham, died at his house of alcohol poisoning.
The Problem • Ever since the death of his band mate, Jon Bonham, Page has suffered from depression, most likely caused by Post-traumatic Stress. • After his death in 1980, Page withdrew from music for several years, effectively breaking up his world renounced band, Led Zeppelin. • Page began a downward spiral of alcoholism and heroin addiction, which kept him in and out of rehab several times.
The Problem • Page eventually began his music career again, forming bands like The Firm in 1984. • Page to this day suffers from depression, and occasional alcohol problems.
Diagnosis • Based on Page’s display of social withdrawal, drug addictions, and alcoholism, I diagnose Jimmy Page with Axis I and Axis IV Dysthymia, or Chronic Depression • While it is obvious he suffers from some sort of depression, his constant progression and regression makes it difficult to accurately diagnose his level of depression.
Psychoanalytic Approach • The Psychoanalytic approach would be the typical 1 on 1 talk therapy for depression • This would help Page find and reveal emotions that he might not even be aware of. • Freudian ideas of Psychology are used in Psychoanalytic therapy, as underlying unconscious thoughts come to be revealed
Psychoanalytic Approach • Through coming to understand his unconscious emotions, Page can finally identify the source of his mental health problems. • Through identifying the problem, Page can learn to come to peace with his past.
Humanistic Approach • The humanistic approach emphasizes the ability for people to make good and rational decisions. • Using this approach on Page will help better his decision making and assist him with getting of his alcoholism and his other destructive decisions.
Conclusion • Jimmy Page currently suffers from Axis I and Axis IV Dysthymia, or Chronic Depression. This was caused as a result of post-traumatic stress • By using Psychoanalytic and Humanistic approaches, the source of Page’s can be found and solved. • Perhaps then Page can one day again play to his full potential again.
