Women in the workforce 1943(ish) • Rosie the Riveter • Women were needed in factories during wartimes • This was done out of patriotism. • Rosie the Riveter was wartime propaganda. • This was the seedlings of the beginning of the women’s movement. • From 1940-1944 women in the work place rose to 20 million. After the war women were forced to lower paying jobs paving the way to EEO.

Sputnik 1 1957 • Oct. 4th 1957 • Soviets announced the launching of the 1st space orbit satellite. • It was an atmospheric detection satellite. • This began a HUGE Space Race between the USA and the Soviets. Dealt with the Cold War.
Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 • October 1962 • JFK and Nikita Khrushchev (Soviet Union) wrestling over the placing of Nuclear Missiles in Cuba. • Almost brought the USA and Soviets to WW III • This was ongoing tension during the Cold War.
1968 Olympics “Fists of Freedom” • Tommie Smith 1st Place • John Carlos 3rd Place • 200 Meters • Represents black pride • Both were shoeless to highlight poverty among African Americans. • Beads around Carlos neck represent all those who have been killed from oppression. • YouTube - Black History: 1968 Olympics
Richard Nixon’s Victory Pose • First shown in his 1968 Presidential Election win. • Often confused with his “I’m not a crook” speech. • Nixon often flashed this symbol for his own victories as well as USA Victories.
Vietnam War 1964-(1968-1975) • United States got involved shortly after the Gulf of Tonkin Incident in 1964. • Our involvement was to help prevent the spread of communism through the free world. • Almost 60,000 U.S. Soldiers were lost/killed/MIA. WWS Helo (Effect)
Hippie Culture (1969) Woodstock • Hippie came from the word “Hipster” when describing a “beatnik” which comes from the book “Why am I so beat” detailing college party life of the 1950’s • Hippies philosophy is make love not war. Saturday Night Fever 1977 • Highlighted the disco era. • John Travolta as Tony Manero. • This movie highlighted the subculture of the Disco age. • Disco dancing and the clubbing scene helped people forget about their dead end jobs etc. • It was a form of youth rebellion. Cola Wars (late 1980’s) • Pepsi and Coke waged a mutual marketing war. • Both mentioned each other in their adds for competitive cross marketing. • Taste tests were being done and it shows the impact of the media on consumerism. YouTube - pepsi commercial
Ayatollah Khomeini 1986-1989 • Was the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran. (1979)—He lead the Iranian Revolution • He was a beloved leader of Islam and was the virtual face of Islam in the non-Muslim world. • Iran Hostage Crisis 1979 happened when 44 Americans were held hostage at the US Embassy. Khomeini was “held responsible” in the American public eye.
