Defining Uncomfortable Feelings • Boredom- an emotional state experienced when an individual is left without saying anything in particular to do, and they are not interested in their surroundings. • Anger- is a strong feeling of displeasure. Anger can range out of control in words, tears, or physical action, or it can stay bottled up inside.
Definitions Continued… • Loneliness- is a painful, empty feeling of isolation. A poor self-concept can make feelings of loneliness worse. • Shyness- an uncomfortable or awkward feeling that commonly occurs in new situations or with unfamiliar people. • Grief- is a feeling of great sadness that lasts for a long while. You may cry often and find it hard to concentrate on schoolwork, feel tired, and have trouble sleeping and eating.
Strategies to deal with Uncomfortable Feelings • Acknowledge your feelings • Confide in a friend • Ask an adult for help • Find a way to laugh about the situation or find a positive side to it • Exercise to release some stress • Give yourself a chance to cool down • Make a plan of action to change the feelings • ETC…..
Everyone feels sad, lonely, or angry once in a while, but it is important not to let these emotions control how you view yourself everyday or how you view the world and situations around you. You are not the only one who experiences these feelings!
Self-Image Words to know: 1. Self-concept- the idea or mental image one has of oneself and one's strengths, weaknesses, status. 2. Attitude- the way a person views something or tends to behave towards it. 3. Habit- an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary. 4. Resiliency- ability to recover readily or “bounce back.”
Self-Esteem & it’s impact on a healthy lifestyle. • A positive self-esteem can enable children to be successful in school and relationships. • A negative self-esteem can lead to depression, learning disabilities, and even discipline problems.
