Costs • What’s in my price range? • Most consumer connections cost less than $50 per month • Charter Cable Modem • $30-$40 monthly depending on speed • SBC DSL • $26-$160 monthly depending on speed • Installation fee extra / Free self install kits available • CLAS DSL • $60 Monthly • DirecWay- $580 in hardware plus $60 monthly • IDSL / ISDN - $119 plus line charges • PLC – Coming Soon!

  6. What do the numbers mean? Most packages are priced in a “Speed for Service Fee Structure” Typically, the speeds are represented as two numbers seperated by a / (768 / 128). Download: The first number represents the download speed. In this example 768 is 76.8kbps (kilobytes per second). But to the bits to bytes conversion the connection is actually closer to 80K per second in real world speed. Upload: (Important if you wish to run a web server or other internet service) The second number represents the upload speed. In this example 128 is 12.8kbps (kilobytes per second). But to the bits to bytes conversion the connection is actually closer to 14K per second in real world speed.

  7. What do the numbers mean? In real world terms a 768/128 connection you would be able to do the following in 1 minute: Download 4 floppies (1.44mb) worth of information Download a 4min MP3 File Download a 5mb Windows Update / Antivirus Update These tasks would take substantially more time on dialup Download 4 floppies (1.44mb) worth of information – 13.5 mins Download a 4min MP3 File – 14.5 mins Download a 5mb Windows Update / Antivirus Update – 16mins
