THE MANY WAYS THE HEARTMAY BE INFLUENCED Subtle influences: I am small and despised (v. 141) Remove from me the way of falsehood (v. 29) Thou hast set at nought all them that err from thy statutes; For their deceit is falsehood. And Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand. Then will I slay my brother Jacob. (Ge 27:41) The pride of thy heart hath deceived thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground? (Ob 1:3)

Attitudes of the heart: Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. (Jno. 14:23) My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; And I am afraid of thy judgments. (v. 120) I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, As much as in all riches. (v. 14)

  16. HOW DOES THIS KEEP ONE FROM SINNING? When one is tempted to hate: Matt. 5:44, But I say unto you, love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you. Jas. 2:8, Howbeit if ye fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thyneighbor as thyself, ye do well: 1 Jno. 3:15, Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

  17. HOW DOES THIS KEEP ONE FROM SINNING? When one is tempted to anger: Eccl. 7:9, Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry; for anger resteth in the bosom of fools. Eph. 4:26, Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath.

  18. HOW DOES THIS KEEP ONE FROM SINNING? When one is tempted to covet: Lk. 12:15, And he said unto them, Take heed, and keep yourselves from all covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. Heb. 13:5, Be ye free from the love of money; content with such things as ye have: for himself hath said, I will in no wise fail thee, neither will I in any wise forsake thee.

  19. HOW DOES THIS KEEP ONE FROM SINNING? When one is tempted to lust: Prov. 6:25, Lust not after her beauty in thy heart; Neither let her take thee with her eyelids. Matt. 5:28, but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. 1 Cor. 6:18, Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

  20. HOW DOES THIS KEEP ONE FROM SINNING? When one is tempted to think evil: Matt 9:4, And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?

  21. HOW DOES THIS KEEP ONE FROM SINNING? When one is tempted to abuse the tongue: Jas. 1:26, If any man thinketh himself to be religious, while he bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his heart, this man's religion is vain.

When one is tempted to steal: Rom. 2:21, Thou therefore that teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? Eph. 4:28, Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have whereof to give to him that hath need.

  23. HOW DOES THIS KEEP ONE FROM SINNING? When one is tempted to drink: Prov. 20:1, Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; And whosoever erreth thereby is not wise. Prov. 23:31, Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, When it sparkleth in the cup, When it goeth down smoothly. 1 Pet. 4:3, For the time past may suffice to have wrought the desire of the Gentiles, and to have walked in lasciviousness, lusts, winebibbings, revellings, carousings, and abominable idolatries.

  24. HOW DOES THIS KEEP ONE FROM SINNING? When one is tempted to sins of the flesh: Eph. 5:3, But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as becometh saints…. 5 For this ye know of a surety, that no fornicator, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no man deceive you with empty words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the sons of disobedience.

When one is tempted to act without Bible authority: Lev. 10:1, And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took each of them his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense thereon, and offered strange fire before Jehovah, which he had not commanded them. 2 And there came forth fire from before Jehovah, and devoured them, and they died before Jehovah. Matt. 28:18, And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.

  26. APPLY GOD’S WORD INSPITE OF CIRCUMSTANCES: • Princes also sat and talked against me; But thy servant did meditate on thy statutes. (v. 23) • This is my comfort in my affliction; For thy word hath quickened me. (v. 50) • The cords of the wicked have wrapped me round; But I have not forgotten thy law. (v. 61) • The proud have had me greatly in derision: Yet have I not swerved from thy law. (v. 51) • The proud have forged a lie against me: With my whole heart will I keep thy precepts. (v. 69)

  27. APPLY GOD’S WORD INSPITE OF CIRCUMSTANCES: • The wicked have laid a snare for me; Yet have I not gone astray from thy precepts. (v. 110) • I am small and despised; Yet do I not forget thy precepts. (v. 141) • Many are my persecutors and mine adversaries; Yet have I not swerved from thy testimonies. (v. 157)
