What is Identity Theft • Identity theft is the act of acquiring and collecting a persons information with the intent of using it for criminal purposes. • Identity Fraud • Actual deceptive use of identity information of another person in connection with various frauds
What Are Thieves Looking For? • Full Name • Date of Birth • Social Insurance • Full Address • Mothers Maiden Name • Username and Passwords • Drivers License number • Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) • Credit Card Information • Bank Account Number • Signatures • Passport Number
What Could This Collected Information Be Used For? • Grant access to you bank accounts • Open new bank accounts • Transfer bank balances • Apply for loans, credit cards, and other goods and services • Make purchases • Hide their criminal activities • Obtain passports • Receive government benefits
What To Do If Your Identity Is Stolen • Step 1 • Contact your local police force and file a report • Step 2 • Contact your bank and credit card company • Step 3 • Contact both of the national credit bureaus and place a fraud alert on your credit reports • Equifax Canada (1-800-465-7166) • Trans Union Canada(1-877-525-3823)
Prevent Identity theft • Be careful about unsolicited emails, telephone calls, or mail. • Only carry the identity documents you need in yur wallet or purse and lock all others up safely • Check your credit reports often • Shield your PIN • Memorize your PIN • Shred personal information • Notify all Financial institutions and the post office about any changes in your address
How we can help in the workplace! • Watch Credit Cards! • If a customer swipes a card we need to check the back of the card to ensure that the signatures match. • If a card is not signed you must ask for photo ID for which you will match the names on the cards and match the photo on the ID to the customer. • Never allow a customer to use a credit card that isn’t theirs • Credit machines are already set up so you cannot use the tap and go feature for purchases over $50 • Credit machines will also lock a credit card so it can no longer be used on that particular purchase if an incorrect pin is entered in 5 times
