OBJECTIVES • To be acquainting with different tools that may be used to obtain small-scale linear measurements (length, depth, diameter, thickness, etc.) • To become familiar with vernier calipers.
Calipers • Caliper is an instrument with two legs used for measuring linear dimensions. • Calipers may be fixed, adjustable, or movable.
Types of Calipers • Inside caliper • Outside caliper • Divider caliper • Odd leg caliper • Vernier Caliper • Digital Caliper • Dial Caliper • Depth caliper
Dial Caliper Reading 5 mm + 0.11 mm = 5.11mm
Basic Statistics Average Standard Deviation DOE Lecture 1
Questions • Describe the procedure of the experiment. • Determine class average and standard deviation for the caliper measurements. • What is the percentage of error and accuracy of each caliper? • Based on these dose one of the instruments consistently provide more repeatable results? • What are the sources of error in the dimensional measurement with caliper?
