  1. What is the Tutor Role? • As a tutor your role is limited • Your role is limited to assisting students academically • Use the Referral Process Tool

  2. What is the Referral process? • The Referral process is used to define and limit your role. • The purpose of a referral is to make sure the individual is referred to the appropriate resource. • Utilizes the College resources

  3. How to make a Referral? There are 4 types of Referrals 1. Just information 2. Name & Information 3. Phone & appointment 4. Take them there

  4. Referral Process #1, just information. • Give general information • How? by giving a place and phone number. • Not the best type of referral

  5. Referral Process #2, give them a name. • Give the individual the place and phone number. • In addition, you also give them a Name. • Better than referral #1

  6. Referral Process #3, Phone & Appointment • Use the phone and contact the person for an appointment for the individual • Give them a Name, Place and phone number. • This is better than #2

  7. Referral Process #4, Take them to the Resource • Take the individual to the referral place. • Also, give them a Name, Place and phone number. • This is the best type of referral.

  8. Utilize College ResourcesCompile a Resource/Referral List • Use your your Student planner and add a contact name to each service. The list is usually in the back of the Student planner • If you do not have a planner use the following example.

  9. Skyline College Campus DirectoryRefer to your planner for more information on Pages 188 -190I recommend you put the names in your planner next to the department/Division

  10. Real Life Example • A Student you are tutoring has a Headache. What do you do? • First refer to your resource referral list in your Student planner. • Implement the Referral Process.

  11. Use one of the Referral tools • First check with your supervisor for phone use or to take them to resources • Implement Referral Strategy, preferably Referral Process # 3 or 4 • If you cannot do Referral Process #3 or 4 use #2
