  5. Slave Trade • Slavery was NOT new • Prisoners of war • Were not mistreated • Agricultural society—not like plantations in New World • Slaves provided by African chiefs • Asante • Fante • Affected the demographics of the land • 5,000/year (Gold Coast alone) • Many died/were killed
