Daughter of a British Colonel, came from an aristocratic family, her mother died young Educated in Paris, France When her father died, she became financially independent. (And had two illegitimate children to Lucien Millevoye, a Parisian) Enthusiastically helped with “Land League” where she helped the Irish save their homes from the British Invested money, time, and articles for “The United Irish Men,” a newspaper founded by Arthur Griffith Early Years
Met Yeats at the Celtic Literary Society and in the National Players' Movement where he was president and she became vice-president. Yeats wrote and gave the play Cathleen níHoulihan, as long as she would play the lead character Yeats was greatly influenced by his infatuation of Maud and even became involved in Irish Nationalism because of her. Founded InghidhenahÉireann(Daughters of Ireland) Married John MacBride in 1903 and had one son, Sean, shortly after Her husband was executed for his part in the “Easter Rising” and she went to prison for a short time. Still she continued her campaign for the Irish and eventually was nicknamed the “Irish Joan of Arc” Later Years
