Material Culture • Physical objects that people create and use.
Nonmaterial Culture • Abstract human creations form a group’s nonmaterial culture.
Symbols • Anything that represents something else • Symbols have a shared meaning attached to them. (use of symbols very basis of human culture)
Language • Organization of written or spoken symbols into a standardized system.
Values • Shared beliefs about what is good or bad, right or wrong, desirable or undesirable.
Norms • Shared rules of conduct that tell people how to act in specific situations. (expectations for behavior, not actual behavior) • Folkways: no moral significance • Mores: carry a moral significance
Folkways • Norms that describe socially acceptable behavior but do not have great moral significance attached to them. • Common customs of everyday life.
Mores (MAWR-ayz) • Have great moral significance • Violation of mores endangers society’s well being and stability. (Laws help to protect us from violating mores)
Culture Trait • An individual tool, act, or belief that is related to a particular situation or need.
Culture Complexes • Individual culture traits combine to form culture complexes.
Cultural Patterns • Cultural complexes combine to form cultural patterns.
