Introduction The celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi take place every year for marking the birth of Lord Ganesh, known as the God of beginnings in Hindu mythology. According to the Hindu calendar, the festival occurs sometime during the month of Bhadra with the date being earmarked as September 2 for Ganesh puja in the year 2019. Lord Ganesh is also believed to be a purveyor of good fortune, luck, and wisdom.
Historical Background According to legend, Ganesh was made out of sandalwood paste by Goddess Parvathi who put him on guard when she went to take a bath. Lord Shiva, upon his return, would not be allowed to pass through by the obedient child. Angered at this behavior, Lord Shiva immediately severed the little one’s head. Goddess Parvathi came to know of this and was left heartbroken, leading her husband to promise that he would resurrect Ganesh. His followers were sent out with instructions to bring back a child’s head but all that they could find was the head of a baby elephant. That led to the rebirth of Lord Ganesh with the head of an elephant.
Traditions The weeks building up to the festivities of Ganesh Chaturthi are full of excitement. Clay idols of Lord Ganesh are made and painted over by the people. Pranapratishhtha is the first event that takes place with priests chanting holy mantras. Next up is a 16-step ritual known as Shodasopachara Puja during which offerings considered to be favorites of the God are placed in front of His idol. It is also very common to see pandals being put up across many localities with huge statues of Lord Ganesh and creative Ganesh Puja decoration ideas being implemented.
Uttarpuja The end of the festivities is marked by a ritual called Uttarpuja. At the end of this, the idols are immersed in water in what is known as Ganpati Visarjan. Devotees chant slogans that are a sign of their respect towards him. During the immersion procession, people indulge in a great deal of dancing, singing, and merry making which is a hallmark of the moment.
Ganesh Puja in New Delhi If you feel that the grandeurs of Ganesh Chaturthi are limited only to the shores of the Arabian Sea and Maharashtra, you are very wrong! Over the course of the last few years, there has been as much fervor in the national capital as in the financial capital of India with idols lining the city streets being a common sight as devotees queue up to make their pick of the best one.
