Three Mile Island (U.S.) • A cooling malfunction in the power plant caused part of the core to melt in the 2nd reactor • The second reactor was destroyed and gas leaked, but not enough to be harmful • Not enough water to cool down the reaction
Chernobyl (Russia) • Out of the four reactors, the 4th suffered a catastrophic power increase, leading to explosions in its core. • This dispersed large quantities of radioactive fuel and core materials into the atmosphere • Rods overheated
Fukushima (Japan) • A tsunami caused a meltdown in 3 of the 6 nuclear reactors • They had water to cool it down, but it was salt water which caused the rods to overheat. • Radiation in Fukushima has been suspected to reach california
Compare and Contrast • Three Mile: Not enough water to cool down the reaction • Chernobyl: Rods overheated • Fukushima: Rods overheated • Each suffered a destroyed reaction and explosion but Chernobyl
Fukushima Aftermath • The sea life has dropped tremendously since the fall of 2011, scientist have been measuring levels of radioactivity in fish and other sea life. Several species of have been cut off in the coast of Fukushima • Due to the massive amount of radiation, Fukushima cannot support life.
Chernobyl Aftermath • Chernobyl has caused soil and the food chain to be washed away. Due to plants, bacteria, fungi and animals, radioactivity varies throughout the land • The life in Chernobyl depend on the size. Smaller animals tend to die faster because of their exposure to the radioactive soil
Three Mile Aftermath • The studies found that the radiation released during the accident were minimal, well below any levels that have been associated with health effects from radiation exposure. • None has found any adverse health effects such as cancers which might be linked to the accident.
