Colonialism in Latin America Guiding Question: What systems were put in place to support colonialism?
System #1: The Encomienda and Indian Slavery • Columbus on Hispaniola • Spanish settlers are encouraged to move to area • Ex: Many Tainos are given to each Spanish settler as slaves. • Indians must work and gather gold for the Spaniards. • Spaniards are supposed to “care for” Indians • Result of this system: Mass death of Tainos and other Indian Groups
Picture • Draw a Picture that shows the Encomienda system. • Think about the relationship between Spaniards and Tainos.
The New Laws of The Indies (1542) • Spanish Government Says: No More Indian Slavery • The Encomienda system had killed most of the Indians, so Spanish government wanted new new approach…
System #2: The Repartimiento • All adult male Indians had to “donate” time during the year to work on Spanish farms, in mines, or on other projects (bridges, cities, etc.) • Workers were given a tiny payment, but this system was basically disguised slavery • Huge numbers of Indians were worked to death, especially in gold and silver mines
Spanish Complaints • Spanish landowners didn’t like the repartimiento system. It did not give them consistent year-round labor. • They pushed for a new system to control the Indians…
System #3: The Hacienda • Goal: Take what was left of Indian lands and put it in the hands of Spanish landowners. • A Hacienda is a large estate – think of a plantation in the American South • Indians were paid very small wages to work on the Hacienda – which was always owned by a Spaniard.
The Problem for Indians • Spanish landowners bought or stole almost all the land in S. America (link to today) • Indians were rounded up into small areas so they could be “Christianized.” But the real motive was often to take their land. • Indians that needed money (wedding, funeral, bad crop, etc.) borrowed from Spanish landowners…but now were in debt for the rest of their lives….Trapped. • Faces in South America – European vs. Indian
System #4: Black Slavery African Slaves were brought from West Africa to The Americas for the following reasons. 1. Resistant to disease (I.e. Small pox) 2. Didn’t know the territory (Couldn’t Escape) 3. Not as unified (from different tribes) 4. Familiar with farming techniques 5. Cultural Belief in superiority
System #5: Triangle Trade“Big Picture” Policy of European countries during the era of colonialism to gain wealth through trade and exploitation of colonies.
From Africa to the Americas Slaves
From the Americas to Europe Raw Materials
From Europe to The Americas Finished Goods
Columbian Exchange,Mercantilism (Triangular Trade),Slave Trade
Old World Sheep apples Asia, Europe and Africa Cattle lemons Bananas olives Rice lettuce Wheat cucumbers Pigs Chickens oranges Coffee Sugar Cane
New World Turkeys Chocolate Cranberries Pecans North and South America Potatoes Peanuts Strawberries Corn (Maize) Pumpkins Avocadoes Vanilla Pineapple Chiles Tomatoes
Columbian Exchange The exchange of biological material from the Old World to the New World and the New World to the Old World during the colonization of the Americas
Example: Hamburger (ow) bun (ow) tomato (nw) cheese (ow) fries (nw) After Columbus Post 1492 Once Columbus made his journey to the new world, the biological material from both places mixed. Now find people with a mixture of Old World and New World foods and make meals that represent this mixing. At least three foods per meal.
Small pox Measles Chicken Pox Malaria Influenza Common Cold Horses Llamas Tobacco Chicle (Chew gum) Papayas Syphilis (Maybe) Other Stuff that moved around the world. From Old World From New World
Mercantilism (Triangular Trade) Policy of European countries during the era of colonialism to gain wealth through trade and exploitation of colonies.
Prediction Time: • What were the long and short term impacts of colonialism on Latin America? • What were the long and short term impacts of colonialism on Europe?
