  1. History of Sustainable Development • After decades of limited success in eliminating poverty, new ideas about development are emerging. Sustainable livelihoods approach represents one of these new ideas about development. • The term sustainable development came into prominence in 1980. • The concept of Sustainable Livelihoods was an important element in the new Labour administration’s 1997 White Paper on international development. • In the late 1990s the term had become one of a trio of principles underpinning UK development policy and the basis for a number of DFID programmes and practices.
