This workshop at the Jamaica Teachers Association Education Conference in April 2015 will focus on understanding brain development and how to use Lumosity, a brain training app, on Android tablets to reach every learner. The workshop will also explore other brain training methods such as robotics, playing musical instruments, and computer programming. Attendees will learn about the Tablets in Schools Project and the importance of 21st-century education.

The Tablets In SchoolsProject The tablets in schools project is by far the most important project the government of Jamaica is implementing over the next 3 years ! • Lumosity runs on; • -Android phones, and Tablets • IPads • PC’s • - The Government of Jamaica’s pilot project has chosen Android as their platform for education

What is Lumosity ? • Lumosity.com started in 2007 • To date 50M users in over 160 countries • Based physically in San Francisco California • Can do training exercises without Internet connection (will need to sync) • Science of product is based on neuroplasticity; (the brain's natural ability to form new connections in order to compensate for injury or changes in one's environment)
How does Lumosity Work? • On creating your account you tell Lumosity what areas of your brain you want to improve and it selects the best exercises for you • 40+ different exercises / Games in 5 areas, Memory, Attention, Flexibility, Speed and Problem Solving

Robotics as another way to exercise the Brain • Robotics using Lego combines the creativity of the Art and Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics subjects (STEAM) • Mona Prep started their own STEM lab for their Kindergarten students two years ago. This lab is based on Lego. • David Hall of Halls of Learning has pioneered this in Jamaica and setup Mona Prep. • STEM is one of the positive initiatives of our own Ministry of Education • Start a STEM lab in your school come September 2015 !!!! Playing a Musical Instrument: another way to exercise the Brain It is a long established fact that music helps in brain development and scientific subjects. FREE Android apps are available to load on your Android devices. One no longer has to buy expensive keyboards and musical instruments Beth just finished playing her piano app
Teaching students Computer Programming to exercise the Brain Use FREETurtle Draw, Algoid and Turtle Graphics app from age 5 ! No need for any expensive computer labs if you have tablets !
Start them YOUNG !!!! Neuroplasticity has shown that the brain does keep changing throughout our lifetime. However develops most in the 0-6 years. Since we know that we NEED to focus on ECI !!!!! Use your tablets to control the robots !!
Good old fashioned READING as another way to exercise the Brain • Add e-Books to your tablets !!!! • There are literally millions of FREE age and GOJ curriculum relevant e-Books for K1-12 for all of Jamaica’s syllabus FREE on the internet in the that can be easily loaded on your tablets
