Senior Spaces: Grand Opening The Library Place for Baby Boomers, Older Adults & their Families Old Bridge Public Library, June 8, 2007
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening • There is a shift in the aging population happening all over the world! • Opportunity for us not a challenge! • New Era in Library Service to the Baby Boomers and Older Adults is Starting Here Today!!!!
Grand Opening: Senior Spaces • Thank You • Board • Library Director, Margie Cyr • Maria Nowak, Best “Orderer” in the World • Staff of the Technical Services Depatment
Grand Opening: Senior Spaces • Diane Meyer, Chief Weeder & Mover • Tim Nyland, Mini Weeder & Mover • Custodial Staff, Tibby, Maria, Matt • Me! • Infolink, Support • Friends & Colleagues around NJ & US
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • Who in this room is a boomer? • What does that mean to you? • How do you look at growing older? • Different from your Parents? Or Grandparents
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • How do we translate this demographic change into positive library services? • What are the implications? • But it is more complicated than that? • Question the notion that there is such a thing as “library services to older adults”
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • What is Library Service to older adults now? • Positive=Younger Older Adults • Negative=Elderly • Is it on the same par as Children’s Services? Teen Services?
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • How do we turn around the Library World and create such a Service? • Do we Have to? • Can’t we just do the same thing we’ve been doing for the last 100 Years? • Who Would Know the Difference? • ------The Boomers Would!!!!!!!
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • Boomers have always thought that they can change the world • Shift of what it means to grow older • Change in what retirement means • Change in almost all facets of Canadian Life
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • What the Boomers are going to do is create a New Life Stage Between Careers and Old Age • Something that really has not previously happened! • And everyone in this room is going to be an active participant in the process
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening • ‘the baby boomers will turn their golden years into an intense time of social activism, volunteerism, and lifelong learning.” “In retirement, the Woodstock generation will still be trying to change the world.” • (Prime Time by Marc Freedman)
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • How will this effect our libraries? • The Boomers allow us to look at Library Services to Adults and Older Adults in a different way • 3 Groups of Older Adults • 40-60, 60-80, 80-100 • Active vs. Inactive
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening • The Boomers give us an opportunity to change the library from a passive entity to one which is a catalyst • The library will become the center of town in every community-- • to be the place for public debate and discussion • to allow for individual instruction • allow for group learning and discovery
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • We want to HOOK the Boomers in Now! • Many have not used the Library in years • Re-introduce the Library/Services • Why is the local Library a better bet than a Barnes and Noble • Boomers are going to redefine retirement and we want to be a part of that
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • Will NOT be Senior Center Participants • Boomers will be looking for Places for • Information • Recreation • Education • Socialization
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • Most difficult Boomer to attract? • Men or Women? • Have not used the library very much • Rarely took the kids to the library • Bought paperbacks at B&N • Library collections are women oriented • Men’s Books are Fewer
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • What do the Boomers want? • Want it NOW! • Don’t Want to Wait! • Expect Good Customer Service! • Can go Elsewhere! • Are Internet savvy! • Don’t really need libraries!!!!!!
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • …..this post-World War II generation, healthier than their parents, will expect the 21st century library to be a cross between the traditional library, a 24/7 learning center and a community college. • Allan M. Kleiman
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • “Boomers won’t be content with a collection of large-print books, and all the library staff will have to be involved in providing services, not just the Outreach Staff. There will be a new kind of adult and older adults services created to lure the Boomers into Libraries.” Allan M. Kleiman
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • “Boomers will expect creative, exciting and stimulating programming and exhibits, enhanced technology, small meeting rooms and large spaces for discussions.” Allan M. Kleiman • Libraries need to acknowledge this new exciting challenge that’s coming and get ready and plan for it………..
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • So this is an opportunity for Revolution • So this is an opportunity to change • So this is an opportunity for us to develop a new vision of what growing older is • So this is a new direction in library services to the baby boomers, older adults and the elderly
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening! • Now, we know all the facts— • What Can we do? • What are some ways for me to rethink my library and the services that we provide • Here are some suggestions-----
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening • New Concept in Library Service • Brooklyn Public Library, SAGE • Libraries for the Future • Old Bridge Public Library • Why are we doing this? • Natural Progression in the development • Everyone wants their place in the Library
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening • 3 Generations of Older Adults • What do we have? (some on loan) • Places to sit, relax, enjoy a book or a cup of coffee • Computers, widescreen, special software
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening • TV/VCR/DVD Player • Phonograph/CD/Cassette Player • Cable TV Playing • Memory Case for Display/Discussion • Books, etc. etc. arranged by subject in a bookstore like atmosphere
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening • Phase II, Summer • Document this Project on the Web • Continue to Develop our Advisory Board • Begin to get our “Classroom Ready” for September • Integrate this space into everything we do---”summer reading club”
Senior Spaces: Grand Opening • Phase III, Fall 2007 • Develop Daily Programs that meet the needs of all 3 generations • Partnering with SENIORNET • Continue to Find Additional Partners, Raritan Bay Medical Center • End of 2008, Mainstream Service!
