Linked Data in a ScientificCollaboration Framework Semantic Web for Health Care and Life Sciences WWW2008 Beijing, China Sudeshna Das April 22, 2008
Outline • Problem Statement • SCF project • Key Features • Architecture • Summary • Team
Problem Stamement Each scientific web community has its own form of organization for digital resources
Problem Statement Each scientist also has his or her own form of resource organization
Problem Statement Structured digital community that leverages existing knowledge bases and captures semantics of the science: Providing fertile collaborative environment & knowledge mining with improved precision
What is the SCF? Scientific Collaboration Framework • Reusable infrastructure for building biomedical web communities • Based on Drupal • low barrier to entry • Integrated Collaborative tools • Web 2.0 • Adapted to the Semantic Web • leverages existing linked data • Designed with emphasis on usability and usefulness
SCF Pilot • Pilot with Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) • Intra-faculty institute to develop joint work on stem cell research • HSCI members • 45 principal faculty • 70 affiliated faculty • Researchers in laboratories • Interdisciplinary and distinct institutions and locations • Full time senior science editor HSCI StemCenter will be the collaborative Knowledge Base for HSCI
Key Features • Member Profiles • Bio Resources • Genes, Antibodies, Model Organisms, • Research Statements • Publishing of on-line content • Articles, Interviews, News • Comments, discussions, tags • Taxonomies • Exposes linked data
Gene Mus Musculus
Summary • Reusable framework for building communities • Easy to adopt • Leverages linked data • Interoperable with other knowledge-bases • Future plans to represent other biological resources
