12 Brain/Mind Natural Learning Principles Focus: Number 11 “Complex learning is enhanced by challenge and inhibited by threat.”
CLARIFICATION Threat is the presence of helplessness and fatigue. Stress: repeated exposure to situations w/o control of the outcome.
Here Lies the Issue Students are spending significant years of development in a state of mind which is actively guarding itself against continuous threat. Therefore, the brain is functioning at a very low level.
Triune Brain Theory Three brains in one Each layer / brain developed in response to evolutionary need Reptilian / Old brain Limbic / Mammalian or mid brain Cerebrum / Neo Cortex or new brain Each layer has separate functions but all three interact substantially
Reptilian Consists of the brain stem and cerebellum Related to physical survival Responsible for digestion, reproduction , circulation and breathing Executes fight or flight response Behaviours are automatic and highly resistant to change
The Limbic System Houses primary centres of emotion Includes amygdala which comes into play in situations that arouse feelings of fear , pity ,anger or disgust
Neocortex Makes language possible Centre of logical and rational thinking Allows us to see ahead and plan for the future Enables voluntary movement Processes sensory information
Zebra and lion • Purpose of fight, flight, freeze is to survive • No time to stop and taste the grass • This, in and of itself, is not a problem • Neocortex can kill you (semi/train) • The “lizard” can kill you (presentation)
“The bottom line is that, in times of threat and emergency we lose access to some of our normal capacities. In effect, we become less intelligent.” -Art Combs Build bridges/relationships Ask questions Create opportunities of real success Use student services (Counselors, ACE, CIS, ETC.) Provide structured, predictable, and risk-friendly classrooms Model metacognition (thnking about thinking and thinking about feeling Because…
The emotional state of the brain is directly related to its capacity to perform at various levels. Too often, the BRAIN is the elephant in the (class) room.”
