Description • Small, hands on vineyard • All grapes except Pinot-Gris are grown on site • Pinot-Gris comes from their family block in Takou Bay- 10 minutes up the road • Goal is to produce quality wine • Describe their vineyard as “compact, quirky, and user friendly” • Have lots of animals at the vineyard
History • Owners Bruce & Sue purchased the property in 2001; it was at the time a kiwifruit orchard. • First vines planted in 2003- Syrah • Began producing wine in 2005 • Next began to plant Sauvignon-Blanc, Chardonnay, & Pinot Gris • All work on the vines is done by Bruce & Sue, from spraying, bunching, and thinning to leaf plucking etc. "no one touch's the grapes" • Now produce approx 13,000 bottles yearly, which is mainly sold through our Cellar door.
Wines • Available now: • Char-boar-nay $ 20.00 • Matured in French oak, whole bunch pressed. • Syrah $ 25.00 • Wonderful soft earthy wine. • Runty Rose $ 18.00 • Made from 100% Syrah grapes. Numerous medal winner, has its own cult following in the Far North. • Sav Blanc $ 18.00 • More tropical than southern styles • Pinot Gris $ 22.00 • Grown on our family block overlooking Takou Bay. • Wild Boar Port $ 25.00 • Ruby in style
Awards • Winery Scoop Medals (09/21/10) • Fat Pig Vineyard won three medals in the international show. • Owners Bruce and Sue Soland entered three new wines at the last minute after the wines arrived back from bottling only a few days before the contest. • “What is most pleasing is that our sauvignon blanc, entered in a competition for the first time, has won a bronze medal. • “We had many critics saying you can’t grow savy in the north.” • Fat Pig won silver for its chardonnay and bronze for its pinot gris.
News • Their shop, Cellar Door, is open 7 days a week 11am to 6pm • They are at the Kerikeri Farmers Market every Sunday 8am to 12am • They also go to the Farmers Market on the Village Green in Paihia every Thursday 2pm to 6pm • Most recent event they hosted was Little Vineyards of Kerikeriin December2011 • Sadly Because of the weather the Christmas Party was cancelled
