  1. PHYSICAL SCIENCE/Earth ScienceMEAP REVIEW for Grade 8 Created by Ms. Jowsey and created for her amazing students to do extremely well on their MEAP test!

  2. pH Scale: 0-14 anything below 7 is an acid anything above 7 is a base

  3. Physical Changes and Chemical changes: • Physical change examples: substance does not change chemically it just changes physically (size, shape, etc..) • Water changing to ice • Ripping a piece of paper • Breaking a plate Chemical Changes: substance changes chemically in to a new substance -Rust(iron+oxygen= iron oxide) -Tarnish -Browning apple Video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqqmFFCwd7k

  4. Clues or signs that a chemical change is taking place: • Bubbles-what do you think this means?? • Color change • Odor • Change in temperature (endothermic/exothermic reaction) Now, what as I mix some chemicals together…  (I hope I know what I am doing!)

  5. Here’s what I mixed: • Baking soda (NaHCO3 sodium bicarbonate) • Calcium chloride (CaCl2) • Phenol Red All that you observed were signs/clues that a chemical change was happening…the end product is Carbon dioxide (CO2)

  6. Earth concepts: Revolution vs. rotation: Revolution is the earth’s path around the sun. 1 revolution takes 365 ¼ days. Rotation is the Earth spinning on its axis. 1 rotation takes 24 hours. Rotation causes day/night Revolution and the 23.5 degree tilt cause the seasons. Can anyone explain why the TILT causes the seasons?

  7. Let’s look at a small video clip about the cause of the seasons: • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taHTA7S_JGk • Pass out handouts. Pleasestudybothsides. Theywillhelpyouunderstand, prepare for the MEAP and helpyou with your MEAP homework.
