Transport Demands of Europe 2020 Meeting transport demand in Europe • An Enlarged European Union • 500 Million inhabitants • 27 Member States • Overall passenger transport demand: + 40%* = 7.500 billion pkm (e.g. 14% increase for urban rail between 1995-2004) • Overall freight transport demand: • + 70%* = 6.000 billion tkm *compared to the year 2000

ERTMS implementation – common goal • Deliver a trans European rail service : • recognized as competitive with other transport modes • excellent in terms of safety, punctuality and reliability • supported by: • an ambitious investment programme in infrastructure and rolling stock, based on the coordinated implementation of ERTMS • a systematic pursuit of the best cost-effective performance • a financing plan of the investments fairly shared by the Member-States, the infrastructure companies, the railway undertakings and the European Union

ERTMS – 6 corridors The 6 studied corridors represent about 6% of the total network but 20% of the total freight traffic
ERTMS Corridor approach • Supported by EC • Meeting with VP Barrot on 15 May: full support • TEN budget 2007-2013: up to 500 M€ for ERTMS projects • TEN financial regulation (under discussion). Proposal to support ERTMS projects at a 50% co-financing rate, both for infrastructure and on-board equipments

ERRAC - What is it? ERRAC – rationale and objectives ERRAC – Why? • Give a new impetus to research and innovation in railways • Identify priorities for research and direct all the available resources towards these commonly agreed priorities • Co-ordinate research projects and programmes to ensure synergies and cross-fertilisation and avoid duplication of efforts • Guide project launch and facilitate consortia building • Evaluate the results of the on-going and completed projects from the point of view of effectiveness and contribution to the overall objectives

Innotrack InnoTrack is a jointly funded research project with the aim to develop cost-effective high performance track infrastructure for heavy rail systems • Total Project Budget: €18.6 m • Total Project Grant: €10.0 m • Total Partners: 35 • First European project with comprehensive cooperation between Infrastructure Managers and Industry
Innotrack -Objectives • The primary objective is to reduce LCC, while improving RAMS characteristics of conventional mixed traffic duty networks. • Implement appropriate changes to specifications and standards to achieve reduced LCC, time to market and cost of safety. • A 30% reduction in LCC of track related costs • Develop decision-making algorithms to harmonise LCC calculation.
R & D today and tomorrow • Currently UNIFE members invest up to €1 billion each year in research and innovation • There is a strong collaboration with the other railway stakeholders in Europe in the framework of EU-funded joint research projects (under FP6 between 2000 – 2006 about € 150 million granted to joint railway research) • FP7 to start in 2007 and end in 2013.
