An Event – Killing of George of Cappadocia in Alexandria • Born in Asia minor; Prominence as military contractor • Takes Holy orders in Constantinople; tutors emperor’s family • Sent to Alexandria to replace Athanansius; has trouble; expelled • Attends Councils – great debates over nature of divinity/person of Christ • Sent back to Alexandria after councils deem views acceptable • Constantinus II dies; days later, riots in Alexandria • Arianism – Jesus Son of God; but not God • Point: complexity of scene; gravity of religious views and practices (cf. economics today)
