  2. Objectives • Students will state the laws regarding to littering • Students will know the laws regarding to abandoning a vehicle or appliance

  3. Littering is: • Litter= any trash thrown, discarded, or dropped by a person onto public property, private property (not owned by them), or onto Ohio’s waterways. • Littering is illegal • Fines up to $1000 and/or 6 months in jail

  4. Question • True or False: it is illegal to litter on property you own.

  5. Answer • False; you may do what you wish on your own property. It is illegal to litter on property that you don’t own.

  6. Littering from a car • Littering is a violation of state law • Drivers can be given a ticket for littering • Drivers can be held responsible their passengers

  7. Question • True or False: Drivers are responsible for littering, even if they are not the ones who litter.

  8. Answer • True! A driver is responsible for all their passengers. Even if the driver does not litter, but the passenger does, they are responsible for it.

  9. Driving with an Unsecured Load • No vehicle should be driven or moved on any highway unless the load is covered to prevent its load from dropping, sifting, leaking, or otherwise escaping

  10. Unsecure Load • Sand and other substances may be dropped for the purpose of securing traction • Water may be used to clean the roadway

  11. Littering and Illegal Dumping • Leaving trash or discarded items on any public/private land or waterway can result in fines or jail time • State law prohibits the placement of trash in someone else’s dumpster without permission from the owner
