  3. Medical Debate • Euthanasia could eliminate the pain that terminally ill patients go through. • Give patients the right for a pain free death

  4. Medical Debate Cont. • Doctors could give them a pain free death by injecting the patient with an overdose of a certain medicine

  5. Philosophical Debate • “euthanasia” derives from Greek- means “good death” • Many ancient western philosophers have thought euthanasia was acceptable in certain situations. • These great philosophers include: Plato, Aristotle, Augustine and Thomas Aquinas.

  6. Philosophical Debate Cont. • Plato thought euthanasia was harmful to character except in certain cases where the patient was extremely ill or in deep suffering.

  7. Religious Debate • Jewish and Christian thinkers have generally opposed suicide because they thought the patient was not fulfilling their duty to God. • These arguments have shaped Christian thought for centuries.
