Core: FCPS Program of StudiesStudents will: • Demonstrate how geography has influenced the history of the United States • Be able to analyze how events after Reconstruction influenced the lives of African Americans • Demonstrate an understanding of how the settlement of the West transformed the United States

  4. Students will: • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of industrialization on the United States from the late 1800s into the early 1900s • Be able to describe the effects of immigration and urbanization on the United States • Be able to analyze and explain responses to industrialization and urbanization in the United States • Be able to analyze the emergence of the United States as a world power since the late 1800s

Students will: • Be able to identify and analyze significant individuals, issues, and events during the 1920s • Be able to identify and analyze the political, social, and economic impact of the Great Depression on the United States • Be able to analyze and explain the major causes, events, personalities, and outcomes of World War II. • Be able to describe and explain United States involvement in world affairs since 1945.

Longfellow Middle School • Our goal is to inspire excellence while meeting the needs of all learners • Students are pre-assessed to determine readiness and • Foundations are built (as needed) • Extensions, enrichment, and accommodations are provided as needed • Each class is designed to insure acquisition of the core curriculum and opportunities to move on a continuum from the “who, what, where….to the how and why” of American history.

Economically, culturally, environmentally, politically? • How did westward expansion affect the regional conflicts between the North and the South?

  12. Geography • Why is the “South” as much a cultural designation as a geographic one? • Why did the “South” fear control by the new federal government? • Why did the United States believe that expanding West was our destiny?
