What is a Sustainable City Economic lights at the downtown in Arles : The new municipality develops economic light through the city to reduce costs of the oublic light. The team would like to reduce strongly this charge. Workers are changing bulbs in each spot. Building with new materials : New buildings at the center of Arles. This is an old city ( roman period ). Houses, flats are very old and sometime destroyed during the last war. Architectes, develop plans and process to change Old houses to new flats for families who want to live at the hearth of Arles.
What is a Sustainable City • Roman buildings like the arena, the theatre : • Five years ago, the municipality with the french agency of Monuments decided to change the front of Arenas and theatre to develop traffic with tourists. Now, More twenty thousand of people stay in Arles to visit this city. • Accomodations : • Its architecture respects the provenal tradition and fits perfectly in the landscape. it comprises villas and apartments, gardens and a swimming pool.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT During the 17th and 18th centuries many aristocratic town houses were built. They form today the core of the charming historical center, where the large number of listed monuments bears witness to 2000 years of history. In 1981 the Roman and Romanesque buildings of Arles were listed as UNESCOworld heritage monuments. Arles is a member of the French network of Ville d’art et d’Histoire, and also of the European network AVEC, (Alliance des villes européennes de la culture - European cultural cities alliance).
Arles has remarkable museums : • The Departmental Museum antique Arles, the Arles archeological museum, anchored since 1995 on the banks of the Rhone River, was built by Henri Ciriani beside the remains of the Roman circus. It contains the archeological collections of the city and the surrounding region , spanning the period from neolithic times to the end of the Roman and early Christian era. • The Museon Arlaten, the local ethnographical museum, is housed in the former Laval-Castellane town house dating from the 15th century. The museum was created in 1896 by Frederic Mistral, a regionalist poet, and exhibits costumes, furniture, tools, objects connected with local religious traditions and superstitions, illustrating life in Provence during the 19th century. .
Around the Roman and Romanesque city of Arles, with its architectural treasures tnat fascinate visitors from all over the world, are three different types of landscapes : • The Camargue, situated between the two branches of the Rhone River, is one of the loveliest natural settings in Europe. Its fauna and flora are protected within the Camargue Regional Nature Park (Parc Naturel Régional de Camargue).The chain of hills called the Alpilles, land of vineyards and olive groves, inspired Frédéric Mistral.The Crau, an arid rocky plateau, is inhabited by an extraordinary number of birds.
The name of Arles is closely connected with that of Vincent Van Gogh. It is impossible to evoke the light of Arles without thinking of his paintings. It was this luminosity that attracted Van Gogh to the south of France. Vincent arrived in Arles one day in February1888 looking for the outside light but also seeking an interior illumination. Here he started a period of intense and impassioned work under the bright sunny sky of Provence.

Arles has always been a city of traditions. Gardians and Arlesian women participate in all the traditional seasonal festivals in and around Arles, the land of Frédéric Mistral. With six other poets he created in 1856 the Félibrige, a literary movement designed to protect and promote the Provençal language.

The Saturday market is a ritual : in is not only one of the most beautiful markets in Provence, but also one of the largest (two kilometres long). There can be found anything your heart desires : fruits and vegetables, cheeses, flowers and spices, meat and fish, honey, all of the fresh produce and regional products that are such fun to taste, as well as clothing, shoes, fabric, crafts . . .
In the Camargue, more than anywhere else in France, the bull is king.Bulls have lived here in the swamps since Roman times, and are part of our daily life.
