  1. BEHAVIORIST VIEW OF HUMAN NATURE By: Kimmy Saini & Anthony Fernandes

  2. Explanation of the view • Behaviorist began as a school of Psychology. • Behaviorism is mainly concerned with the behaviours that are associated with feelings and thinking, imagining or desiring. John B. Watson: (founder of behaviourism) • Behaviorism was originated by a man named John B. Watson, who was an American psychologist.

  3. Psychologist behaviorist • The psychologist behaviorists argued that they could not observe states of consciousness, therefore psychologist should not be concerned with the behaviourist view.

  4. Albert Bandura experiment (1925) • His experiment was “BOBO THE CLOWN” • Albert Bandura used a boy for this experiment to see what he does with BOBO after seeing another adult punch it. • A toy gun was given to the little boy and a hammer. • A behaviorist would say that we do what we see. • For example: we were taught to believe that green is green and that fear is a unpleasant feeling.

  5. BehavioristPhilosophers • Behaviorist philosophers have argued that one can examine mental activities by observing ones behavior • Gilbert Ryle: He is a British philosopher, and he stated that mental activities and mental states can be observed by looking at the external behavior that tie to the mental state.

  6. Continued... • Hilary Putnam: He is a contemporary philosopher, and she has argued that it is really easy to come up with examples that show behaviourism is wrong. • Example: an actor acting out someone that endures a lot of pain. Behaviorism says that even though one is acting out to be in pain, his/her conscious does not experience any at the moment. Therefore, ones behaviour would be wrong.

  7. Behaviorism • In behaviorism, our conscious mind disappears. But yet we are still aware of the things that make us feel sad and happy. • Behaviorism says that all feelings are external behaviors that other people can be able to observe (crying, sad face)
