Conductor of Underground Railroad (What) • Harriet Tubman helped over 300 slaves escape North by 1860, which is only a 10 years from when she escaped herself. • In her first trips back, she helped her family members escape, including her parents, sister, brother, and their children. • She was known as “Moses” leading her people out of bondage. • About being a conductor on the Underground Railroad, she once told fellow abolitionist, Frederick Douglas, “she never lost a passenger.”
When • In 1849, she escaped North, finding her own freedom • By 1860 she had made the perilous trip to slave country 19 times, “conducting” others North to safety • She died in 1913
Where • Tubman was born a slave in Maryland's Dorchester County around 1820 • When she escaped North, she made her way to Pennsylvania and later moved to Philadelphia, where she found • After the war, she settled in Auburn, New York. She lived there until she died.
Why (is it important to know about this event/person) • Fredrick Douglas said of her, “Excepting John Brown . . . of sacred memory . . . I know of no one who willingly encountered more perils and hardships to serve our enslaved people than [Harriet Tubman]. • John Brown called her “General Tubman,” and consulted her about his raid on Harper’s Ferry. He said she was “one of the braves persons on this continent.” • During the Civil War she worked for the Union as a cook, a nurse, and even a spy.
