Instructions • You will see a word and then two definitions or examples. • Choose which definition or example is the correct one.
Allegory • Repetition of the same or similar consonant sounds • Story or poem in which characters or events stand for or symbolize real people, events, or abstract ideas
Alliteration • Repetition of consonant sounds • Repetition of vowel sounds
Ambiguity • Deliberately suggesting two or more meanings • Reference to someone or something known from outside of the work
Analogy • Extended metaphor, elaborately comparing two things that are vastly different • Comparison made between two things to show how they are alike
Anecdote • This guy pulled over to help me change my flat tire. Which seems like a nice thing, but he took over instead of helping. After he was finished, I thanked him, let him leave, and then I unloosed the lug nuts again. I had to fix his mistakes. I hate when people think they know more than me because I am a female. • A struggle between opposing forces or characters.
Internal Conflict • The ice kept me from driving to work. • My depression kept me from getting out of bed.
Epanalepsis • Common sense is not so common • A way of speaking that is characteristic of a certain geographical area, often confused for “accent”.
Farce • Spaceballs, The Hangover, The Bridesmaids • A short story which teaches a lesson on how to succeed in life.
Foil • A character who can only be described in a few words, doesn’t change, one dimensional • Acts as a contrast to the protagonist, a mirror, a reflection of the character traits.
