5.11 Manhattan Project J. Robert Oppenheimer Atom Bomb Why Truman was hesitant to use it Hiroshima & Nagasaki Effects How it led to Japanese surrender • Code name for secret mission to build atomic bomb; German idea brought to US by Albert Einstein AB in NYC • Lead scientist, he and others begged Truman not to use it • Split atoms, release energy, 3 built, 1st tested in NM desert • Tremendous civilian casualty, ignite oxygen? Fearing impeachment, gave approval • H: 8/6/45, “Little Boy” dropped from the Enola Gay, J told to surrender or get another, N: 8/9/1945, J told to surrender or get another, cities chosen b/c of factories and b/c they hadn’t been bombed yet • Almost 80k (city pop 250k) killed instantly in Hiroshima, 40k in Nagasaki • Japan told to surrender or face another, surrendered on August 14, 1945 • May 8th, 1945 = VE Day August 14th, 1945 = VJ Day • US spends billions of $$ to rebuild G & J b/c learned from WWI that leaving country in ruin leads to more problems! • If Japan surrenders to USSR (declared war 8/9/45) Communism may spread there.
