Practical Journalism JUNE 2013
Haymarket Media Group Facts • 1957 Cornmarket Press establish themselves with publication Directory for Graduates. • 1964- Hazell Watson & Viney, investsin the publisher so Hazell + Cornmarket becomes Haymarket. • They are now a global brand with offices in Australia, Singapore, Germany, India and of course the UK! • In 2013 they announced they were “Going Google” and embracing the cloud computing service platform. • Haymarket clients include F1 Racing, The British Army and Jaguar. • They employ over 2000 people including KU graduates. “ Haymarket has its heart and soul in publishing and media.”
So Why We Were There? • To develop a conceptual product for Haymarket to pitch to their client Jaguar. • To Improve the consumer /brand relationship and change young peoples perceptions about “our” brand. • To think outside the box to come up with an original, creative product that satisfied our brief. • To work professionally together as a team whilst using our own individual strengths, learning how a professional company produces a product. • To gain valuable experience that would act as another stepping stone towards our careers.
Our Final Concept • A quarterly Magazine ( seasonal) • Festival Issue • Partnerships with clothing brands , drinks companies • Distributed through Ticketmaster, at festivals • Social media presence and free app • Interviews with celebrity guests • The ultimate festival guide One of my VERY early cover idea designs.
Expectations Vs. Reality Expectations Reality In actual fact several ideas were bounced around . A week later we reworked a large portion of our idea. The team were available but it was very much “ our” project, sometimes we were confused about what was actually required from us. One member challenged us at pretty much every turn, which forced us to really think what we were doing. • We would automatically come up with a brilliant idea that everyone loved. • There would be very clear direction from the Haymarket team. • All team members would get on amazingly.
My Personal Feelings • I am very proud of the product however I wish there could have been more “journalism content involved” • I communicate well as a team member and believe that I contributed to all conceptual discussions and the design process. • I am not as confident as I would like to be yet but have already taken small steps to rectify this. • I learnt a lot from being in a professional environment and about the process of “focusing” a concept.
Next Time… • I am developing my leadership skills further. • I will utilise what I have to my advantage i.e. make more contacts. • I have a deeper reserve of capability than I originally thought, I will reflect on this and use it. • Remember that everyone gets nervous at times it’s natural!
