William the Conqueror • King • Duke of Normandy • 1066 conquered England & became king • Strong monarchy in England • Normans took over offices and land • Established political and social order • Started new language – English • More powerful than French King?!? • Sub vassals to him not lords • Admin system – Doomsday Book

  12. Are names important… • Will ask names, but usually there is some sort of context unlike this class exercise • Need to know MAJOR people, not really the name of Cecilia’s lord and such • Why would I put names of Popes in with names of Kings in this exercise? • Why in order?
