  2. First things first: How much money should I bring to Japan?

  3. About $2,500-$3000 in CASH.

  4. What do I need $2-3K for? • food • first month's rent and utilities • travel (to explore Tokyo, your prefecture, etc.) • buying and setting up a cell phone • setting up a bank account • buying/leasing a car • household goods • toiletries • random fun stuff...

  5. Where should I change my money? 1. your bank (you need to talk to them anyway) 2. US Airport 3. Tokyo Narita Airport 4. Keio Plaza Hotel during Orientation There's a good chance you won't have the opportunity to exchange U.S. Dollars for yen, so take advantage of airports and Tokyo while you can.

  6. SALARY AND TAXES

  7. Year 1 on JET: ¥3,360,000 - or - ~ $34,400* *exchange rate on 6/21/13: 97.7 JPY: 1 USD

  8. Year 2 ¥3.6 million Year 3 ¥3.9 million Years 4&5 ¥3.96 million

  9. Deductions from your salary Include: Pension* Employment insurance Health insurance JET accident insurance *can claim this money back once you officially return to the U.S.

  10. JET Program Accident Insurance Policy • Covers what the National Health Insurance does not • Provides you with health and accident insurance when you travel overseas while on JET. • This is all explained in this blue book. KEEP IT!

  11. Taxes • ALTs' first 2 years tax free • complete form 6166 • CIRs are not exempt at all

  13. Cash and cards • cash based society • a US card is good to keep on hand

  14. Expenses • cell phone • internet • rent • transportation • food and beverages • sending money home • other

  15. Buying from your predecessor

  16. After JET This is at least a year away, but... take your Pension Fund blue book back home submit paperwork for pension refund
