More on Essays • An article is what is in Table of Contents • Thesis is not just “I agree” or “I don’t agree” • Take a clear and specific stand on something that people may disagree about • Need to keep it narrow • Articles are broad • Your essay should pick one idea and be much narrower
Plan Your Essay (in groups) • Suppose you are asked to write an essay on what this film is about: • What is the message? • What symbolism is used to convey this message? • What are possible thesis statements about this film? • What evidence is there to support them?
Thesis Paragraph: First Draft In his short-film Food, Jan Svankmajer seats a wealthy man down with a poor man for an unusual lunch. I will argue that this “lunch” can be read as an allegory of the ruthlessness of business that is concealed behind a facade of polite manners. I will give many reasons why this lunch is not about eating but about class issues.
Summarize paragraphs Try to use a few words to describe each planned paragraph. Then, ask yourself, which paragraph are related to one another? Can I group them under one idea in the thesis?
Summarize (1) Svankmajer indicates the different economic situations of the two men by the type of clothing each wears and the condition of their garments…….. (2) The filmmaker also draws a sharp distinction between these two men through their table manners. ……..
Summarize ( 3) The poor man seems to be overwhelmed by bodily hunger and is motivated to eat various objects only after seeing the rich man eat them……… (4) The business man does not eat his clothing and other objects because he thinks they will satisfy his hunger, but rather because he sees an opportunity to take advantage of the poor man’s hunger. The fact that he does not eat his silverware tells us that he intends to eat his lunch date………
Summarize (5) The waiter, although seemingly unimportant, represents all those who ignore the ways in which polite manners often mask the rather cannibalistic way wealthy people treat the poor..…….
Revising your thesis What will you be talking about in your paper? In what order? Can you be more specific than “many reasons”?
In his short-film Food, Jan Svankmajer seats a wealthy man down with a poor man for an unusual lunch. I will argue that this “lunch” can be read as an allegory of the ruthlessness of business that is concealed behind a façade of polite manners. First, I will explain how Svankmajer alerts us to the difference in class between these two men in a variety of ways. I will then argue that the poor man and the business man eat their clothes and silverware for different reasons. Finally, I will explain why the waiter is important.
In his short-film Food, Jan Svankmajer seats a wealthy man down with a poor man for an unusual lunch. Svankmajer’s “lunch” can be read as an allegory of the ruthlessness of business that is concealed behind a façade of polite manners. Svankmajer alerts us to the difference in class between these two men through the men’s clothes and manners. He also shows us that the poor man eats his clothes and silverware out of hunger, while the business man eats them in order to trick the poor man. Within this allegory, the waiter can be understood to symbolize those who ignore disparities in class.
How much detail should I go into in my thesis? Don’t need to describe each paragraph in detail. Some paragraphs are about the same issue, but introduce different supporting evidence. Example: 1 idea: how we know the men are of different classes 2 ways to support this: condition of their clothes and their table manners
