Conventions of an epic • Hero is a figure of great national or even cosmic importance, usually the ideal man of his culture. • He has superhuman or divine traits. • The setting is vast in scope. It covers great geoprahpicaldisances. • The action consists of deed of valor or superhuman courage. • Supernatural forces interste themselves in the action and interven at times. • The style of writing is elevated, even ceremnonial. • Opens by stating the theme of the epic. • Writer invokes a Muse, on of the nine daughers of Zeus. The poets prays to the muses to provide him with divine inspiritation to tell the story of a great hero.
Conventions of an epic • Narrative opens in the middle of things, usually with the hero at his lowest point. • Uses flashbacks. • Catalogs and genealogies are given. They lists objects, places, and people to place the finite action of the epic within a broader, universal context. • Main characters give extended formal speeches. • Use of the epic smile, extended similes. • Heavy use of repetition and stock phrases. • Use of allegories.
