Order must be! Cluster layers on nanotemplates Axel Enders, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, DMR 0747704 The creation of nanostructures with well-defined geometry, chemistry, and long-range periodicity is a key challenge in nanomagnetism. Our new synthesis strategy: Deposition of Co clusters on stable Boron Nitride template monolayers by buffer layer assisted growth. The clusters occupy the depressions in the template and form an ordered array. Monte-Carlo simulations show that cluster-cluster interactions result in cluster coalescence and growth. Such ordered cluster films could be useful for application as patterned media for ultrahigh density magnetic data storage Phys. Rev. B. 78 (2008) 165430 Surf. Sci. Letters 602 (14) (2008) L95 – L99
Conference for Undergraduate Women in PhysicsAxel Enders, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, DMR 0747704 We bring together outstanding undergraduate women researchers in Physics for a three-day conference, in October 2009. Participants will expand upon their current research experiences, interact with physics students from other universities, attend scientific talks given by invited physicists from other Midwestern universities, and participate in workshops and panel discussions. Funding for the first year is provided by NSF CAREER, UNL, NCMN, Nebraska MRSEC and Nebraska EpSCOR. www.physics.unl.edu/~wophy
