Objectives • Name ternary compounds given their formulae • Given the name, write the formula of an ionic compound • Define, name, and recognize polyatomic ions
Ternary Ionic Compounds • A ternary compound contains atoms of three different elements • Usually ternary compounds contain a polyatomic ion • Polyatomic Ions are tightly bound groups of atoms that behave as a unit and carry a charge • Example: SO42-, NO3-, PO43-
Naming Ternary Compounds • When naming polyatomic ions, remember that an -ateor-iteending indicates that the compound contains oxygen • Write the name of the metal ion • Write the name of the polyatomic ion using the naming chart
Name the Following: • LiCN • Lithium cyanide • K2SO3 • Potassium sulfite • Fe2(CO3)3 • Iron (III) carbonate • NH4Cl • Ammonium Chloride
Formulas for Ternary Compounds • Write the symbol and charge of the metal • Write the symbol and charge for the polyatomic ion • When more than one polyatomic ion is needed to balance the charges, parentheses are placed around the entire polyatomic ion with a subscript outside • Never use parentheses when there is only a single polyatomic ion • Balance the charges using the criss cross method
Write the Formula: • Sodium phosphate • Na3PO4 • Aluminum hydroxide • Al(OH)3 • Ammonium chloride • NH4Cl • Chromium (III) nitrite • Cr(NO2)3
