  1. The Distributive Property Making sure EVERY TERM gets the same treatment!

  2. How would you model using tiles? • 3 ( 2 + 4) means 3 groups of 2 + 4 6 + 18 Tiles 6 + 6 +

  3. What about variable expressions? • How would you model 4(x -2) X - 2 What do you see? X - 2 X - 2 X - 2

  4. Isn’t there an EASIER way? • Sure there is! • Using multiplication “DISTRIBUTE” the factor outside the grouping signs to EVERY TERM inside!!!!!! EXAMPLE: 2 (x +4) Becomes 2 x + 2 4 Now DO THE MATH! 2x + 4 is the final answer!

  5. Now YOU try! • 4(x + 4) • 6(y – 3) • -3(4-x) • - (5-x)

  6. What about the dreaded CRCT? • Find the area of this rectangle HINT!!! AREA = Length  Width 3 2x +2

  7. Now you try The box is 4 units wide 2 This line is 3x in length Find the area of the BLUE box!

  8. How is this used in mental math? • You have to buy 6 cds that cost $14.95 each. Without using paper and pencil, can you figure out the cost before tax in your head? THINK!!!!! 6  14.95 = 6 (15.00 – 0.05) = 6  15 - 6  0.05 = 90.00 – 0.30 The cds cost $89.70!
