Innovation in Shelter Relate innovation to practice
Goals • Linking innovation and local solutions • Mobilizing innovation and research capacity • Network for knowledge sharing. • Facilitating a practical approach
How it started • Following the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan, the Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC) initiated a innovation project funded by the Dutch government. • Objectives: • An innovation symposium bringing universities, industry and humanitarian world together • A pilot project with cardboard shelter and wood gasification stoves
3 day symposium hosted by the Technical University of Eindhoven, november ‘07 • University • Industrial design / product development, architecture • Business • Multinationals (Philips, DSM), tent manufacturers, inventors • Humanitarian organisations • IFRC, RCs and Dutch NGO’s
Innovative Sheltering Seminar Universities Private Sector NGO and Red Cross
Five groups Identified • Mapping • High-Tec innovations for low-Tec solutions • Hard shell sheltering • Teaching and information for local innovations • Transitional sheltering
How to proceed • Anchoring projects in a programme • Linking innovation with standards/local solutions • Facilitating testing and sharing of experiences • Mapping local solutions and innovation
