  5. Research Training Networks Aim:Trans-national networks with common research project as a vehicle to provide training and transfer of knowledge. Researchers:Early stage and experienced (up to 10 years) Funding: (Min of 65% of funding on researchers’ costs) Researcher – living, mobility, career exploratory allowances Host – funding for researcher networking, general organisation and management of the project, audit and management costs (7%), overheads (10%), some equipment costs (if justified …) Duration:Fellowships from 3 months - 3 years; 4 year network 5 Human Resources and Mobility ProgrammeMarie Curie Actions

Enriching NetworkingSuggestions from Brussels • Organisation of scientific/training and managerial network meetings. • Invitation of external experts for scientific, administrative, financial review and complementary skills training • Visits, secondments between contractors for transfer ofknowledge • Collaboration with other MCRTNs in similar or complementary fields 6

Enriching NetworkingSuggestions from Brussels • Attendance at international conferences and workshops; presentation and dissemination of the network research (e.g. organisation of a final network conference with wider participation or as a “satellite workshop” at a major conference related to the project’s subject) • Allocate time within the first meeting for developing joint activities of ESRs and ERs; allow for networking among them (web page?) • “Socialising” (e.g. joint dinners, …) can actually be quite efficient in this respect… 7

Enriching NetworkingSuggestions from Brussels • Secondments can be an efficient tool to increase network «cohesion» • Presentation of achievements at international events and attendance at (inter-)national training schools • Network-wide training activities (e.g. workshops, summer schools) that exploit the inter/multidisciplinary and intersectorial aspects of the project; external experts may contribute • Participation in training should be properly recorded and recognised in order to make maximum use of the learning in the future career. KEEP THE NETWORK MANAGER UPDATED!!!!!!! 8

  13. Contract Boundaries • Aim to select at least 40% women (Annex III.2.1b). OK! • Maximum 30% of total person-months provided by researchers from Third Countries, higher in exceptional cases only (Annex III). CAREFUL! • Visits/secondments to other contractors of appointed researchers within 30% of their total appointment time, otherwise new appointment (Annex III.3.2i). 13

Additional Duties • Follow-up of the researchers via questionnaires two years after the end of the project • Creating and maintaining a database for all recruited researchers (by the Network Coordinator and Manager) • Ensuring that the recruited researchers complete the assessment questionnaires • Ensuring contact with the recruited researchers for at least two years after the end of the project and request them to complete the follow up questionnaire 15

Follow-up & Questionnaires • Scientist-in-charge questionnaire (at the end of the project): Personal evaluation of the project, comments and suggestions to improve the RTN • Assessment questionnaire (at the end of the training period): The feedback from researchers on the overall impact of the network’s activity • Follow-up questionnaire (2 years after the training period) To evaluate the career progress, recognition of research excellence and scientific outputs of ESR or ER 16

Career Development Plan • For all researchers with appointment > 6 months • Goals Identify short-term needs for improving current performance and long-term career options (CV online) • Benefits Planning process that helps development needs and career objectives; communication tool between researcher and supervisor 16

Implementation of Project • Annex I is reference document to assess successful implementation of project. • All contractors are collectively responsible for implementation of Annex I and use of Community funds. • Keep Project Officer (and then keep Coordinator) fully informed of developments, possible changes, Ethical Issues, etc. • Important deliverable is both Quantity and Quality of Training to/ToK with appointed researchers. 17

Administrative and financial details Cost structure • Costs related to the recruited researcher • Living Allowance: Application of reference rates • Travel allowance: Based upon the distance between the location of origin and the contractor’s premises • Mobility allowance: 600 or 900€ (depending on family situation at the time of appointment). • Career exploratory allowance: 2000€ (only for appointments >1year) • Participation expenses of the researcher: Upon actual costs (up to 400€/person-month) for participation in conferences, meetings, secondments, etc. At least 65% of the Community contribution must be spent on cost categories A, B, C, D and E 20
