  1. The Bahamas By: John Stensland and Chelsea Poesch

  2. Location • The Bahamas are located in the Northwestern hemisphere. • The Atlantic ocean and the Caribbean sea surround the Bahamas.

  3. Place • Near the Bahamas are the Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles. • The Bahamas are low lying islands, which means that they have no mountains and are very flat. • They were formed from coral and dead sea animals. That is why they are so low . The highest point in the Bahamas is only 63 meters high.

  4. Climate • The Bahamas have a very tropical climate which is generally year round nice weather. • They don’t expand to extreme temps. That means that they don’t get off the normal temperatures. • Normally their temperatures are around 70-80 degrees.

  5. Crops • Some crops in the Bahamas are carrots, celery, cabbage, hot peppers, and sweet peppers. • It is very nice to grow crops in the Bahamas, because of the nice weather.

  6. Plants/Trees/Wildlife • Some plants and trees are the Allamanda, Bougainvillea, and Frangipani. Tree- coconut palm, Sea grape tree. Plant- Tamarind. • Wildlife- - Fish- Blackbar soldierfish. Mamal- Seacow (Manatee), dolphins, Jumping turtle, Racoon, land crabs, Hermit Crab

  7. Population/Language/Cities • Population- 354, 563 people in 2011 for the Bahamas. Since 1990, the population has increased by 100,000. • Language- Most Bahamians speak English. • Major Cities- Abaco, Andros, Cat Island, Crooked Island. Capital- Nassau This is the flag of the Bahamas. The main colors are blue, yellow, and black, as you can see

  8. Human/ Environment Relationships • Natural Resources- Salt, Aragonite, Timber (wood), arable land. • Agriculture/industries- crops, poultry, livestock, dairy

  9. Economic Issues/Affects of the Climate for People • Economic Issues (jobs)- The Bahamas are a stable relatively nation. There are not as many good workers as needed though. An example is many unskilled labor jobs. •  Affects of the climate for people: the hot weather brings lots of tourism into the Bahamas. They also have lots of beaches. The beaches are another reason many vacationers come.

  11. Famous People/ Immigration • Debbie Ferguson, Olympian and sprint medalist. Mychal Thompson, former NBA player. Rick Fox, basketball player. Persia White, actress. • Immigration:The Bahamas are basically nationalistic, so they welcome all sorts of people.

Region in the Bahamas • The Bahamas are made of 700 islands plus 2,400 baby cays, although visitors tend to focus on only a handful of the islands. • In the Bahamas, there is a Prime Minister, a Senate, and the House of Assembly. • In the Bahamas, there are 85% black 12% white, and 3% Asian and Hispanic. • A lot of the population of the Bahamas are Christian. Although 32% is Baptist.

Cuisine (food)/sports • Some food in the Bahamas are crawfish, land crabs, crab with macaroni and cheese, and guava duff (a delicious Bahamian desert) that people from the Bahamas favor. • Here are some of the sports they play: dolphin swimming, scuba diving, fishing , mini sub diving, and sightseeing. Family life/homes • Families say that there is so much to see and do. “The ocean is amazing from a picture on a postcard, but the view is even better,” is what vacationers say when they visit the Bahamas. • The homes in the Bahamas are very modern and mostly built for the ocean. There are a lot of beach houses, so that means they are right on the ocean. Only some houses are on stilts, though.

  16. Clothing/music/recreational activities • Here are some of there clothing people in the Bahamas wear. Tank tops, swimsuits, thin dresses, flower shirt, jeans, and lots and lots of shorts. • They do a dance culture of junkanoo. Junkanoo means rush. So they like to move quick on their feet for their dance. Their dances are very colorful. • Bahamian tennis player Mark Knowles along with Daniel Nestor (Canadian) won the Men's Doubles the 2002 Australian Open 36 Championship.
