  2. Family Beauregard married Marie Antoinette LaureVillere in 1841 They had three children named René, Henri and Laure Marie died in childbirth and Beauregard married Caroline Deslonde ten years later.

  3. The Civil War Beauregard was a general for the Confederacy during the duration of the Civil War. He fought in many important battles including The Battle of Fort Sumter, both battles of Bull Run, Shiloh, both Battles of Fort Wagner and the second battle of Petersburg.

Fort Sumter Charleston Harbor, South Carolina After being appointed to the position of general on March 1st, 1860 by Jefferson Davis, Beauregard was put in charge of the South Carolina division of the Confederate Army. Beauregard ordered his men to fire on Fort Sumter, and on April 13th Union soldiers surrendered from lack of food and water, and the constant bombardment of Confederate cannons.

  6. Bull Run July 21, 1861. First major land battle for the armies of Virginia. McDowell crossed at Sudley Ford and attacked the Confederate left flank on Matthews Hill. On July 16, 1861, Union army under Brig. Gen. Irvin McDowell marched from Washington against the Confederate army, fighting raged throughout the day as Confederate forces were driven back to Henry Hill. Late in the afternoon, Confederate reinforcements extended and broke the Union right flank. The Federal retreat rapidly deteriorated into a rout.

  7. Relationship with Jefferson Davis After taking a sick leave without permission Beauregard was fired by Davis for a period of two months. Davis didn’t like Beauregard’s over the top battle strategies in the later part of the war. When Davis died he refused to go to his funeral saying that “We have always been enemies, I cannot pretend to be sorry that he is gone.”

  8. Post-war He declined offers to be a general in the Romanian, Brazilian, and Egyptian armies, because he wanted to stay in the south. He invented a system of cable powered street railway cars. He ran the Louisiana lottery starting in 1877 until his death in 1893.

  9. Post-war He wrote many military books including “Principles and Maxims of the Art of War,” ”Report on the Defense of Charleston,” and ”A Commentary on the Campaign and Battle of Manassas.”
