  2. 2010 ten trends in academic libraries ACRL Research Planning and Review Committee • Academic library collection growth is driven by patron demand … • Budget challenges will continue and libraries will evolve as a result. • Changes in higher education will require that librarians possess diverse skill sets. • Demands for accountability and assessment will increase • Digitization of unique library collections will increase and require a larger share of resources. • • Explosive growth of mobile devices and applications will drive new services. Smart phones, • e-book readers, iPads, and other handheld devices will drive user demands and expectations. The 2009 ECAR study of undergraduate students … found that 51.2 % of respondents owned an Internet-capable handheld device and another 11.8 % planned to purchase one within the next 12 months. • Increased collaboration will expand the role of the library within the institution and beyond • Libraries… continue … to develop scholarly communication and intellectual property services • Technology will continue to change services and required skills. • … library will change as physical space is repurposed and virtual space expands. Mobile Phone Browser Limitations • CONTEXT NOT CONTENT • Add the most important and useful information • Users are paying fees to access your mobile site • SCREEN SIZE • Different mobile phones have different screen sizes • BACK BUTTONS AND LINKING • Some phones do not have back buttons • FONT SIZE • Increase to improve readability • CLICKABLE AREA • Increase for phones with less precision • REDUCE BANDWIDTH • Use small images .jpg, gif, or png (load faster) • Mobile browsers maybe set to not display images (alt tag) • LIMIT TEXT ENTRY • Use radio buttons or lists NJLA Technology Innovation Award
