Hardware Support Information • Most Innovative libraries use a single physical UNIX server to support their Innovative application software, although supplementary servers are sometimes used to support specific functions. • The number of processors required per server depends on the number of application users. The majority of libraries use one or two processors, although some of the largest libraries may have as many as eight processors per server. • Most Innovative libraries use Linux or Solaris as their operating system, on an Intel/AMD X86 or UltraSPARC processor respectively. • Innovative does support other combinations for a small number of customers.
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and Powerwatch • The UPS that the library purchases must be an American Power Conversion (APC) SmartUPS or Matrix model (see SmartUPS Operation) in order to work with Innovative's Powerwatch software.
SmartUPS Operation • When Innovative's Powerwatch software communicates with a library-supplied APC SmartUPS, the communication takes place over a dedicated RS-232 serial connection between a serial port on the physical server and the serial port on the APC SmartUPS. • The library must provide a suitable cable and the UNIX device name of the serial device. • Serial parameters for communication between Powerwatch and the APC SmartUPS are 2400 Baud, 8 Data Bits, 1 Stop Bit and No Parity.
Compilers and Debuggers • O/S Specific 'C' Compiler • You must install the OS specific 'C' compiler. • On Linux systems, this is the "GCC" (GNU C compiler). • On other systems, the vendor-supplied compiler must be used. • For example, on Solaris, the SUN Studio 'C' compiler must be used. • The compiler should be installed in the supplier's recommended default location. • OS specific compilers are frequently supplied at extra cost by the system supplier, but may be available at no charge from other sources, such as the Sun Developer Network (SDN), which offers a free 'C' compiler license for download.
Compilers and Debuggers • Debugger • Innovative requires that the appropriate debugger be loaded on the new server. • The debugger should be installed in the supplier's recommended default location.
