3/25 ROMEO + JULIET
SOCRATIC CIRCLES!RULES OF ENGAGEMENT • THIS IS NOT A DEBATE! • The goal is to determine the best possible answer by revealing and discussing differing perspectives. • This activity involves two circles, an inner and an outer. • The inner circle discusses the question at hand while the outer circle (remaining mostly silent) takes notes and prepares comments to be interjected at the end of the main discussion. • The circles will switch roles as we move from one question/idea to another. • Remember this discussion is guided by answering questions and questioning answers! Feel free to challenge your peers!
SOCRATIC CIRCLE QUESTIONS • Is Shakespeare still relevant today? Why? • Given ultimate freedom would you choose to keep Shakespeare in high school? Don’t just answer “yes” or “no” make an argument you can support. • Again with complete freedom, is there a way to “change” Shakespeare’s works to create relevance? How would you create relevance? • In your own opinion describe the relationship of power and freedom. Do we see this relationship in Romeo + Juliet at all?
