Agenda • Definitions • Background • SACS Review Process • Quality Enhancement Plan • Timeline • What’s next?
Definitions • COMPLIANCE Committee • Documents compliance with SACS requirements and standards • Evaluates level of compliance (compliant/partial/non-compliant) • Recommends corrective action to ensure compliance. • Some members of the Compliance Committee also serve on the Quality Enhancement Committee (QEC). • The Compliance Certification document is due to SACS by March 15, 2007.
Definitions, continued • Quality Enhancement PLAN (QEP) • QEP stands for the Quality Enhancement Plan and • Each college needs to have a documented plan • Outlines how they will evaluate quality within the institution and processes to address identified concerns and areas that need improvement. • Projects must be connected to student achievement • The QEP document is due to SACS by August 2007.
Definitions, continued • Quality Enhancement COMMITTEE (QEC) • Manages the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) process • Develops and implements components of the QEP • Reviews/revises the plan annually • Identifies key problems and areas for improvement across the institution as a whole. • Documentation from QEC activities provides compelling evidence that: • the QEP is implemented; • problems and areas for improvement are identified; • action is taken to improve functions throughout the organization • follow-up is conducted to determine if actions implemented had the desired effects/outcomes. • Ongoing review is essential to demonstrate to SACS that quality enhancement is a continuous process within the college rather than a last minute effort to prepare for the SACS survey visit.
Background • Changes in the new SACS requirements • No 450 “must” statements • Replaced with 12 Core Requirements, 48 Comprehensive Standards, and 8 Federal Requirements • Integrity & Compelling Evidence is the key to success • Prior SACS visit is baseline – expect that as minimum • Responsibility is with institution to “make its case” regarding compliance – more subjective • Documents – SACS prefers web-based • Compliance Certification • Quality Enhancement Plan
Philosophical Basis • Commitment to Compliance • Commitment to Quality Enhancement • Integrity • Peer Review
Review Process Overview • Review of compliance certification by off-site review committee • Report of off-site review committee shared orally or in writing with institution • Opportunity to respond/clarify issues from the off-site review (Focus Report: optional) • Review by on-site review committee of QEP and compliance issues identified by off-site committee (or which arise during on-site visit) • Report of on-site review committee sent to institution and Commission as basis for accreditation
QEP Core Requirement • Core Requirement 12 (QEP) is reviewed by an on-site committee • “The institution has developed an acceptable Quality Enhancement Plan and demonstrates that the plan is part of an ongoing planning and evaluation process.” • Documentation for the QEP will be published on the SPC SACS/QEP web site. • The final QEP is due by August 2007.
What’s next • Compliance Committee • Write final draft • Collect compelling evidence • Develop and implement improvements to procedures • Develop website • QEC • Continue monthly QEC meetings • Do literature review on topic • Begin awareness campaign of topic • Start preparing expert teams • Write the QEP • Publish documentation on the SPC web site
What does this mean to me? • Compliance with SACS encourages review and improvement of current procedures • Stronger graduation “test” for students • Outcomes used to improve gen ed programs • New timeline for faculty grad course requirement • More local options for your professional development plan • Quality Enhancement Plan encourages new improvement initiatives • Exciting opportunities to participate in some great projects • Questions?
