Today’s Announcement • Six-Weeks TEST: • Next Tuesday and Wednesday!!! • All of the Human Body Systems • Study your notes and the reviewsheet!!! Study: Don’t study:
Today’s Warm-Up #1 • Everyone knows Helium willcause your voice to soundlike a chipmunk… • But what about Sulfur Hexafluoride???
Today’s Warm-Up #2 • Circulatory System… a hot little jam. • Song and Lyrics • Paste lyrics into lab-book
Today’s Objectives • Circulatory System • Function • Major parts of the circulatory system • Blood vessels • Arteries • Veins • Capillaries • Blood • Heart

What is the function of the circulatory system? • To move materials throughout the body: • Oxygen • Carbon dioxide & other wastes • Nutrients (food) • Hormones (chemical messengers) • Antibodies (fight infection)
List the parts of thecirculatory system: • Blood vessels • Arteries • Veins • Capillaries • Blood • Heart
Compare & contrast the three types of blood vessels. • Arteries carry blood away from the heart- usually oxygen-rich. • Veins carry blood to the heart- usually oxygen-poor. • Capillaries connect arteries & veins, and allow food, wastes, etc. to pass in and out
Describe arteries • Blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart • Have thick, elastic walls made of connective tissue and smooth muscle tissue
Describe veins • Blood vessels that carry oxygen-poor blood back toward the heart • Have one-way valves that keep blood moving toward the heart
Describe capillaries • Very thin- Only one cell thick • Connect arteries & veins • Allow gases & nutrients to be transferred
What is blood? • Is RED (bright or dark)… not blue! • Carries nutrients, water, oxygen and waste products to and from your body cells. • About 5,000,000 red blood cells in ONE drop of blood.
What does blood transport? • The Bloodmobile- music video
What is blood? • Red blood cells: • Transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, waste products, etc. • Contain hemoglobin-allows them to carry oxygen & gives them their color • Last about 4 months
What is blood? • White blood cells: • Protect the body from germs/bacteria • Attack and destroy germs when they enter the body
What is blood? • Platelets: • Special blood cells that help stop bleeding • They “clog up” a cut and help form a scab
What is blood? • Plasma: • The liquid part of the blood- straw (light brown) color • About half of your blood is made of plasma • Plasma is made in the liver
The Heart • Size of your fist • Thick, muscular walls • Divided into two pumps- left and right • Each pump has two chambers • Upper chambers - atrium receives blood coming in from the veins • Lower chambers - ventricle squeezes blood out into the arteries
